It is understandable if you thought Flying Penguin Technologies was all but defunct based on the lack of activity on this blog. I have still been doing the IPv6 Evangelist thing, albeit mostly over in the Fediverse these days. Nevertheless, the FPT infrastructure has been maintained all this time in support of the mission.
You are reading this post on the blog's new home on the same server as the main website and SixSpotting. The blog was first created on Blogger, which is now a Google property. Since they have a track record of killing useful services, I wanted to make sure I was ahead of any potential changes.
When I first set up this blog I wanted something easy to stand up and reachable via IPv6. At the time I didn't want to take on the maintenance of a blog platform, and Blogger was pretty much the only service that met the second criteria. The analytics it provides were a nice bonus. There was something quite pleasing about making a post and watching it get read all around the globe. But, then what? I never got the sense that any action resulted from this readership. As someone in sales might say: Where's the conversion?
Still wanting to keep things simple but bring things "in house", I looked at static site generators. There were a few that fit the bill, but my bias toward Python and the ease of importing the contents of the Blogger export meant Pelican rose to the top of the list.
The existing contents will still be available on Blogger for the forseeable future. This should allow us to find any oddities that happened during the import and clean things up.
Perhaps this migration be the nudge I need to build some momentum for some longer form posts where a microblog just won't do. Stay tuned!
